Australian Curriculum Update

Expressions of interest to join the ACARA HPE advisory panel closed last week. It is understood more than 100 applications were received. This coincides with the appointments of Janice Atkin as senior project officer and lead writer Professor Doune Macdonald, Head of School of Human Movement at The University of Queensland. ACARA is planning to host consultation forums in November, offering teachers a chance to input into the writing of the Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education.

What are the key questions to consider?

  • What should be the HPE entitlement for all students?
  • What should the HPE curricilum comprise?
  • What role should HPE play in addressing public health concerns?
  • What HPE areas will be privileged in the Curriculum?
  • What about terminology?
  • What should the structure and strands look like
  • What should be the nature of senior courses?
  • What abut the role of sport in HPE?
  • What are some of the philosophical differences in HPE?
There is a lot to think about. ACHPER encourages all members of the profession to start the professional dialogue at your school and among your networks. Perhaps the focus of your discourse could be: What are two items that you would like to be considered in the development of the initial advise paper?
